I don't know how I could possibly have not known about this, but Lifehacker alerted me to the existence of everystockphoto. The images on the site are stock or Creative Commons-licensed so you are free to use them on your blog or in presentations. If you sign up for (free) membership you can rate, tag, collect and comment on photos, but if you're just passing you can carry out a quick search for photos. Pretty great, huh?
Update: Also recommended, Wikimedia Commons, a treasure trove of free-to-use media

I love thunderstorms. I really love them. When I was little I was terrified of storms, until my dad went to the library and borrowed a book for me that explained what lightning is, and what makes thunder. I don't remember what the book was called, but I remember that it had a black and white checkerboard cover. I would love to find a copy.
Anyway, after my dad read that book with me, I stopped being scared of storms, and started loving them. If I can find a way to be outside in a storm without getting drenched/struck by lightning, I will.
Today, I got home from work and was pottering around in the kitchen when I heard the first grumbles of thunder. Great, I thought. Perhaps I can take some pictures of the lightning. (Not that I know how to do this, I just thought I might point my camera at it and if I took enough pictures maybe it would work).
Fast forward to ten minutes later, when the storm had really got going. By this point I had realised that if I didn't close the damn windows pretty quick, I might drown, and was starting to seriously wonder if I could fit under the sofa, as it was all getting pretty scary. I think this may actually be the first time in about 25 years that I was scared by a storm. And no, I didn't get any photos. I think I have to file that one under 'an opportunity missed'.
I saw this amazing photo by Tanya Nagar on Londonist, and had to find out more.
I'm not sure why but I can't stop looking at this photo. I will certainly be watching out for more of Tanya's work.
On the grounds that it's better to post late than never, I'm going to have to use Comeeko to turn my photos into a comic strip. Well, why wouldn't you?

I have made an executive decision not to post every last Project 365 photo onto Vox, on the grounds that most of them are not very good at all. The ones I have posted are ones that I like mainly because they make me laugh; there aren't many that I think are good photos.
Still, one of the purposes of the project is to teach you to take better photographs, and although I am still awful, I have at least learnt that 9 times out of 10, it's a good idea to turn the flash off my camera...
After spending some 'quality time' wrestling with iPhoto and the Mac mini - more intuitive my arse - I have finally managed to upload the first set of Project 365 photos to this blog. There is clearly a long way to go before I am going to be any good at this stuff...
Yesterday was my birthday and we celebrated by going to Rita's in Southall for a curry - which is my favourite place in the country for curry. It was absolutely pouring with rain and I don't think any of us really wanted to go out, but a couple of mouthfuls of Butter Chicken and Sag Paneer soon made me glad I was there.
It's not really ideal having a birthday on 3rd January, as it's cold, everyone is broke and still hungover from Christmas and New Year, and the thought of having a big night out is just... not that great. So if you're unfortunate enough to share my birthday, I can heartily recommend having a really good curry with family and friends, and doing so at Rita's is becoming my new birthday tradition.
I have spotted a bit of a snag with Project 365, which is that should you have one of those days when you don't go anywhere much or do anything of note, it's pretty hard to come up with an interesting picture. I am going to have to take drastic action if it looks like there are going to be many more pictures like today's - of my fridge... Gah.
I have decided that there is little point in making any New Year’s Resolutions, as they so often fall by the wayside by about the 9th January, but there are several things that I’d like to do this year. They are:
- Project 365: Take a photo a day for a year (via Lifehacker)
- Couch to 5k
- At least one yoga class a week
And of course keeping up this blog with at least a few posts a week. Hmmm. We’ll see…
First of the 365 pics to be posted as soon as I can work out where the camera USB lead is in the nest of a thousand cables that we have in this household.
